I've noticed lately, especially on radio and TV advertisements, that the announcer says things that are not only stupid but don't make sense.
The most common one is "Up to 50% or more in savings". That doesn't make any sense. If you put a limit on the savings, like up to 50%, then you can't save more than that. Take for instance, a pitcher that can hold up to a gallon of water, if you try to put more than a gallon of water in the pitcher, it overflows, making it impossible to hold more than a gallon of water. It holds up to a gallon, not more.
Every morning I get up and turn on the TV. I am baffled by one phrase that comes out of Merideth Viera's mouth right before a commercial break. She says "Coming up, we'll have a special guest (insert name here), but first, this is Today on NBC". What does that mean? She could say "we'll be back after these messages” or "you're watching the Today Show on NBC, but first these messages".
Whenever I listen to the radio, the host says "welcome to the (inserted name here) show". It's not a show because you are not showing me anything. It is a program. I am listening to you tell me things but I cannot see anything, your gestures or props. It is a PROGRAM.
