The elevator dream is a common one. If you are descending, it means you may encounter misfortune or disappointment. It is a dream of caution. It certainly makes sense as you were experiencing a tough emotional time in real life. If you had been ascending this would be a good dream promising hope and good fortune...Since the dreams stopped once you split, you may have experienced a new sense of relief.
