Well To me we as a society are the ones who contribute to this necessity by being so dependent on this commodity from foreign countries and the funny thing is that no matter how high it goes and how many times we try to complain you know you are going to wind up and just take it with a grain of salt in my area we are paying 3.15 a gallon for regular and 3.78 for diesel. I guess as long as you need it you will learn to sacrifice other things like eating out at McDonald's 5 times a week. It is all about being able to budget your strained finances to make the ends meet. Now is this the cost of the US pays for being in War? Hmm who is to say but like with all necessities like toilet paper and milk, you are going to just have to pay the price even if you are on Welfare or not!!

i sold my pickup truck. five hundred dollar a month for two vechical was to much. we already spent a fortune in daycare for two kids. we are one car family now.

I'm whining about $3.03 locally, but my daughter is paying $3.79 at the cheap stations in Silicon Valley. I traded my premium guzzling SUV back in July for a smaller SUV that takes regular gasoline and gets a little better mileage.

The politicians in the Saudi pockets are much to blame---we've had ample opportunity to find alternative sources of fuel and not one thing has been done. They all wring their hands and complain, but they make way too much money to give up oil.

I think it is well past the time to stop the speculators for controlling the price of oil. AND it is far beyond the time for us stop letting oil dictate how we live.  If 100 million barrels of oil are bought for speculation that the price will increase..then that is 100 million barrels that won't go on the market until the price goes up.  In essence, each speculator becomes a "hoarder" and wishes to profit by helping to control the price.  As news has reported..almost 80% of the price per gallon is caused by this speculation.
To some degree I think that US oil companies historically have created a lot of the problems we face to day through some shady dealings.  However, it is the consumer who can, as we always have, make changes by cutting back.  There is no oil shortage and most likely won't be one of many, many more years.  OPEC will not pump more because they know that there is a large world inventory.  If the speculators were stopped...now...there would be an oil glut.  No one can give "power" to the people.  The people are the "power".  We just need to apply it. Each time we look to government for solutions, we lose power.  Make oil companies build new refineries...do away with "favored tax breaks" and other "pork barrels"...star paying the debt the government has saddled us with and everything else will fall into place.  One major thing that is needed is to get rid of this worthless paper and coins that are called 'money". The paper the money is printed on is worth more then the value of the printed denomination.  We the people have a "faith only" value to our currency. Back to gold and silver.  At one time our government refused to use paper to pay our debts.  Cash on the barrelhead. The Rothchilds REALLY hated that. But I guess that comfort zones are more important "belttightening".  So it would seem.

They talk so much about a struggling economy and want to make incentive packages and send out money to get the economy moving but how can it when we can barely afford to get to work and back let alone get out shopping. you can bring up the war but gas prices were already going up before the war even started, the war just gave them the excuse to drive the prices up quicker ... we need to stop questioning the companies on the surplus and the cost of finding the oil and make them use some of their record making profits to find it on their own ...remeber its gets reporting quarterly and every quarter its another record breaker ..... Opec was relieved of responsibility of pricing a few presidents back. Bush has only aggravated the price assault. It has made some of us poorer! I cant buy a house closer to my job so i have had to give up my (middle class???) job making 40,000 a yr and take a job closer to home at 32,000 a yr. A difference of 72 miles round trip to 5 miles round trip. I drive a Prius so gas mileage is not the main issue.The lowest gas price from my house to my old job is 3.21 /gal.
 The issue was i need the extra money from gas purchases to buy food and pay bills. (just like everyone else)
  Opec used to be regulated on their prices and had to prove their reasons for raising prices........that is no longer. Opec wants the U.S. to pay what they pay overseas for fuel. 7.25 per liter to 15.00 per liter.......Opec's goal for the U.S. gas prices are 4.15 by the end of August. If they arent stopped they will reached that ahead of schedule.
 If the U.S. would allow Texas to reopen the the oil wells here then Opec would have no choice but to lower prices.
 So say thank-you to our U.S. gov't and hand them another tube of lube BEFORE the next step in screwing us over while they get richer.

One other thing am i the only one that thinks it is strange that Opec says they have a 4 B dollar loss and then the next week talk about a 26 B dollar profit for THE SAME F____ING quarter?

Just a continuation on the assault against the middle class of the US.  BTW, what ever happened to the hydrogen cars that Bush promised about 2 State of the Union addresses ago?  Anyone remember that?  Haven't heard so much as a progress report from that little tidbit.  No, our woes won't be over until the Auto/Oil/Government money monopoly has gotten us for all we are worth.  Only when in the face of the ulitmate bottoming out will the government come up with a "MIRACLE SOLUTION".  Why can't the government "urge" oil and auto industries into a solution by offering tax breaks towards the develpment of such resources.  If they've held on to a car that ran of off vegtable oil since the late 80s, surely they have the technological prowess and engineering to get me something cheap.  I blame Bush for everything.  Like in the military, if the unit fails at completing the task, then the commander is ultimately the one responsible.  Our economy fails, our lives are impacted, I look to our elected leaders.  Our just happens to be dancing a jig on the white house steps waiting for the Republican Presidential Nominee that he trashed 8 years ago.  Of course, why not dance...the man is set for life.

has anyone seen the movie "Who killed the electric car?"?  if you were to see it and realize who has control in the us.  at one point, gm had an electric car up and running with people wanting it.  what did gm do?  they destroyed all of them.  why?  we would no longer need to rely on oil.  crude oil is needed to produce different kinds of oil (transmission, break fluid, power steering, motor oil, FUEL)  most cars rely on all of the above to operate, the electric car needed only batteries.  i think we need to bring the electric car back!!!

Sold the SUV and the Lexus.  Now driving a Honda Hybrid, and a Toyota ECHO.  Smaller cars but better gas mileage.  Unfortunately they cost as much as the Lexus and SUV.  Life is grand!  People are crazy if they actually think things are going to get better or get back to the way it was.  World is taking a crazy turn, and it seems like all our government is doing is filling up their pockets as fast as they can.  Wouldnt shock me to see them all pack up and head over to DUBAI soon.  God Bless America!!!  Weird the faster God is removed from America, the faster America falls apart.  Hmmmm

WHO is doing anything about it. The news reports it as a big problem but NO one but the consumer knows it. Congress is the controling factor and no one their will discuss it openly. Kickbacks I presume. I say quit buying it at those prices and put America back to work in our own oil fields. Has to be much cheaper than importing it and keep our money in America.

I agree with you - the faster God is taken out the quicker we fall apart.  But the government doesn't see that.

As a struggling single mother - the gas prices make me sick.  Between all my standard bills (including daycare) I have no extra money to do anything or to take my daughter to do things, because I'm shoving what extra money I do have into my damn gas tank.  And I refuse to go onto welfare.  Everything I have is made by working my a** off.  

Price gouging is exactly what these stupid gas and oil companies are doing.  Why isn't that being taken care.  And of course - because gas is going up - EVERYTHING else is going up.  

I wish the government would realize this.  but I know they won't.  They are going to realize something when the economy goes into a further recession than we already are.  And then low and behold - oh maybe we should take care of our citizens.

I read a lot of comments that seemed to fit my life today.

At 3.06 a gallon down the street, I am feeling the pinch on my gas fill-ups. I don't drive a smart car and have buyer's remorse for purchasing the SUV. Luckily, it is not one of the more larger SUVs on the market. I heard a lady talking the other night about how her Suburban costs nearly 150.00 to fill.

One thing I hope my employer will begin to allow is the ability to work from home more often. Each day I save $12.00 when I stay home and telecommute. At this point, all signs point to discouragement, but not everyone can afford to live near their work building.

Sadly, stories like Toyota and Chrysler, cutting back on production, are starting to rear their ugly heads and that eventually means jobs. When jobs begin to fall and they have already, that is when things are really going to hit home.

Ironically, San Antonio has a business that makes money off gas prices, Valero. I would be really interested in hearing how the 'average joe' working at Valero feels about a possible $4 gallon of gas affects them. (average joe being someone between 30,000 - 75,000 annually supporting a family of 3 or 4)

I've got an idea, why doesn't the Committee on Foreign Trade STOP buying oil from all the other countries!  Which government official will be brave enough to do that?  Come on, these candidates all talk the talk...let's talk ACTION and do something to help our American citizens for a change.  And they all say let's buy American commodities...well LETS!  And government assist whomever can come up with a NEW fuel for our vehicles.  An affordable fuel like $.35 a gallon.  We all can't afford to get rid of our present gas guzzling vehicles and switch to lesser burning fuel vehicles, so come up with something that will fuel our current vehicles.  Not some Electric vehicle that STILL requires gas...that's DUMB!  We need a new gas to be produced HERE in America and FOR Americans.  Come on U.S. Government...try helping YOUR citizens out for a change like you quickly do other foreign countries.  Gas is absurdly high; ALL other items of necessity are extremely high;  PARKING LOTS ask from anywhere of $7.00 an hour to $13.00 an hour or $15.00 all day for parking and OUR city council want to raise that AGAIN!...that is ridiculous!  Especially for Downtown workers...If an Employee parks at a $15.00 parking lot for week...that would cost Downtown Workers $75 a week, $300 a month just to park to come to work.  $300 a MONTH PARKING!!!  And Our City Government came to our rescue...they give us the opportunity to receive $45 a month for parking assistance.   A drop in bucket I say...Come on Get REAL!  What do you think this does to the minimum wage downtown worker?  HUH  $300 a month it costs a downtown employee and proposed to go up?  Government Help your people!!  

Here's my $.02 - when adjusted for inflation is actually about $3.50:

1.  We, as a country, have done very little to rid our dependence on foreign oil to include not having built an oil refinery since 1979.  Compounding the problem is the insistence on the SUV "Rolling Living Rooms" and other trucks used as daily drivers when, in fact, most folks don't truly have any need for such vehicles - the exceptions being those with large families and others with occupations requiring such vehicles.  Alternative fuels are nice but I really don't see a true and serious effort to make progress here.  Back to my first statement, we've got a lot of oil right here in our own country but environmentalists have pooh-poohed any hope of that right, wrong, or otherwise.  This country was made great by our own self-reliance, now that we seem to be straying further and further away from that, look at our situation.

2.  Politicians and Corporations - nuff' said.  Our politicians here in this country are rotten to the core, not just the president, but all of them including those running for office right now.  Further, look at these folks over in the Middle East and other OPEC nations making money hand over foot while a lot of their populations live as they did in the 18th century.....Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc.  Meantime, back at the ranch we have people be laid off while CEOs are raking in incomes to the tune of $10 - $350 million a year.  I have no doubt about these folks having great responsibilities but they aren't that great!  Do these folks give a damn about "Average Joe and Jane" - No!  I'm all for capitalism but this is getting totally out of control and the fiber that has made this country what it is continues to melt away.  As several of you have mentioned here, politicians and corporations are all in bed together and doing so at our expense.

The question now is what can we do and who will do it?

The majority of the cars I see on the road these days aren't cars at all. They're SUVs or trucks, and they're not utility vehicles, either. 95% of the ones I see are in pristine condition, like they've never seen a 2x4 or a shovel. We Americans are finally starting to see the fruits of our pompousness. Most of us have spent every penny we have living it up in our F150s and Hummers, expecting to get a hand-out from the government when things go awry. Really the same thing is happening in two big worlds of ours: housing and transportation. We have spent much of our money on the "American Dream," not bothering to save for a rainy day.

Don't say you didn't see it coming. Now it's time for us to take responsibility for our actions, grin and bear it while our whole economy reshuffles itself. It most likely won't be like the 1930s, but it most certainly might destroy the financial status of most of the sub-prime mortgage buyers who drive around in suburbans... back to the ol' rental house and the minivan...

As for my family, we live in an apartment, and we have two vehicles; neither are hybrids but both get more than 35 mpg. We're feeling the crunch a little, too. We're having to save longer in order to replace the a/v receiver that has the right speaker cutting in and out all the time (not to mention our archaic TV!.) We're having to reconsider the timing of car repairs on our 10-year-old car. Can the tires last a few more months? The brakes? The belts? I wonder if I even remember what Pizza Hut tastes like.

"...Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." We have done too much to exalt ourselves and our social status by buying houses and vehicles we can't really afford. Well, America, welcome to humility. Stop blaming the president. Stop blaming our elected leaders. Stop blaming oil companies, or big corporations, or anyone else. It's YOUR fault just as much as anyone else's, just like it was my family's fault for driving both of our cars to work when we work within a mile of each other. We stopped driving the second car and saved $120 a month, just like that. The next thing to go is the DVR we love and use the heck out of but don't really need...

And btw - I have a Chevy Cavalier (4 door sedan).  I do not drive a truck or SUV, and I'm paying over $40 a week for gas.  

So for those saying people don't bother to save for a rainy day - it's kinda hard when living expenses (rent, daycare, utilities, NO CABLE, bare minimum on food, etc) - outweigh your income.

I have no extras - except a cell phone (I do not have a land line) - I need a way to contact people or my daycare to contact me.  And I'm beyond struggling.  I'd love to "save for a rainy day"  when things become a little cheaper (NECESSITIES specifically) - it won't be so bad.  

I got another idea...Lets not sell gas 24 hrs a day!  Convenience Stores should sell gas between the hours of 6:00 a.m. thru 10:00 p.m. and the Gas Stations that do close for business at whatever time of the evenings...should close for business at least 2 days of the week.  This should conserve a whole lot of gas, which will cause our Reserves to fill up and back up the foreign gas sales.  The foreigners will then start worrying and get their turbs all wacked out thus start lowering their prices.  It's not just the larger vehicles that have hurt the gas situation...it's basically the greed in other countries and then that gets us here in the U.S. to start acting like them.  Don't sell gas 24 hours a day (do it like alcohol...it's not sold 24 hrs a day)

We hear you SA MOM and we are all with you and wish to god (yes I said GOD and always will) that someone or something gets done with this ever so ridiculous rising cost of not just gas, but of EVERYTHING!!  AMERICA listen to MOMS of America and how they struggle to make ends meet...is that what you want?  To have our Moms struggling like early old world ways?  Well that's what its come down to...poverty in America and think how it is with the real lower income Americans.  THINK! Do something to help YOUR citizens AMERICA!!!  

Our Federal Government has been under the thumb of the big corporations for a long time.  The biggest of the big-bad are the oil companies who themselves are flunkys for the arabs.  Those people do not want any other energy sources.  Their dabbling in other methods is just a whitewash and so is the weak government involvement in other forms of energy. Their income depends on a vast herd buying their product.  Solar energy is free and endless.  It already is working and technology is right on the edge of making it work efficiently enough that we could all use it to power just about everything.  A serious effort would make it work for all of us except the oil business, of course they own the world so that can't happen.  If you want to blame someone for the mess we are in- Blame the politicians with their pockets lined, the people lining their pockets and ourselves for letting the government run hog wild.

There are a lot of people that blame Bush, the Saudis, and the "greedy big oil" companies.. when are people going to realize that it is us, the voters, that got us into this problem and continue to keep us there? What can we do about it? Find alternative sources as the politicians suggest in their "do nothing campaign." That's fine but the ethanol craze has done nothing but create higher prices, waste tax payer dollars and produce nothing that works other than higher priced gasoline. The other alternatives (solar, wind, etc.) do nothing to move automobiles and trucks down the road.
When is congress, the people that have perpetuated these higher prices, going to allow Americans to drill for oil in and around the United States? There are proven reserves of pertroleum within the confines of the territorial boundaries of the United States that would make us totally independent of Middle Eastern oil and yet Congress will not allow anyone to drill for it. Why?
Members of Congress will tell you that it would take at least 10 years from the first drill bit starting the first hole to getting gasoline into your car's fuel tank. If we had started drilling back when it was first brought up the 10 years would have passed 20 years ago!

We're so quick to complain but does it change your habits...  I continue to walk by and see people sitting in thier car in a parking lot talking away on thier cell phone with the engine running for 30-60 minutes.  Yes, they can afford but it drives up the demand of gas on all of us, leading to greater cost.  Then, look at ALL the company vehicles that just sit there running for hours, sometimes without anyone in them wasting gas.  Who pays for that, first the customer of the company (e.g. Time Warner, ATT, CPS, SAWS etc...) and then again, all of us for driving up the demand of gas.  So, there is one piece of the problem belongs to us, the consumer.  BTW, I now have a Prius and it is great running car.. smooth, plenty of room, and also... 48-52 MPG.  Gas will NEVER get any cheaper... so you better start buying smart.

I think the people who point out that ethanol is not the answer are right in the long run.  It isn't a good idea to be using food for fuel.  Using corn to make alcohol has caused some increase in the price of corn, but not a lot.  If it was widely used as fuel the price would go up more, though the law of supply and demand requires that additional supply would appear to meet the  demand and the rise would be modified.  I think it could be part of the short term solution.  Brazil is not the US and they have a completely different set of circumstances, but I believe they are completely oil import free due to their use of ethanol.

Oil itself has to be considered a short term answer.  How ever much may still be untapped, there is still only so much and once it is gone it is gone.  Even drilling in the ANWR and other such locations would be a short term measure.  That oil will be gone and then what?

Wind power?  I think it is an eyesore and I just hate to see those windmills out in the desert, but I guess we are stuck with them for a long time to come.  They do work to make power.  Maybe wave power can be harnessed, but I just don't see it.  

I think the only long term answer is the sun.  Right now a solar power system that will power a house or a car is just too big, but they are being used right now in some places successfully.  If you actually have enough room and don't mind the solar panels everywhere they will do the job now.  I have a friend in California who lives way off the grid.  He has plenty of room out in the country and he got a solar system that powers his house.  There is a company in Austin that is manufacturing a peel and stick solar panel designed to be used on standing seam metal roofs.  I don't know if they are on the market yet, but the whole idea of that is that they will be cheap.  Once the price and size of the panels goes down, we can all get free power.  If it works on a house it will work on a car, or maybe free electric power will lead to electric cars that can be recharged by solar electric.

I haven't made any changes in my personal life yet.  My kids are grown, I have a pretty good income, I can still afford the gas.  I don't like having to spend so much on gas, but if I have to I will and it won't really hurt me.  I worry more about no gas at all.  That isn't the story a lot of people would give.  A two car, two job family with a couple of kids to tote around is spending $500 or more on gas every month.  That is a lot.

I think we have to put the blame a lot of places.  Mostly, we have to blame ourselves.  We are responsible for our lives and it does no good to try to shift the blame.  We elect weak opportunists to office.  Once there they take the money from the status quo to maintain the status quo.  The corporate/industrial/government complex is in the oil business.  It is not in their short term (the only important time period for this country) interest to develop plans that would cut into oil dependence and oil profits.  Even though we are in a world with a finite supply of our energy lifeblood, no real effort has ever been made to develop alternatives.  Us, the oil companies, the oil sheiks, our government; all hold some of the responsibility.  So now what?  The blame is apportioned.  Let us now try to do something about it.

We need to try to wreck OPEC's production quotas and OPEC along with it.  We need to pump the oil we have.  We need to try to make the supply a little bigger for a while by growing sugar producing plants like corn, sugar beets and sugar cane.  Most of all we need to get our heads out of our rear ends and demand that the research into alternate fuels be made a serious priority.

Here is how this all works.  We already have solutions to a world without oil, lots of them.  But in the mean time, we might as well use up the oil, and the best way to do it is to pay the sand nigg, I mean the middle east, for their vast pools of oil, and on the way deflate the dollar so that they don't get squat in the end.  Then, and only then, after they have run out of oil, we start drilling at home and if we get bored, bomb those bastards gathering about the big black cube holding the moon rock into a sheet of glass so we can look down from the satellites and admire our vision.

This isn't going to work until we get rid of the fat people, of course.

Gas is rediculous. Im a broke college student who has enough things to worry about. I have to worry about getting good grades, pay my rent and bills and now i have to worry about gas.

First off, I am glad I drive a compact car and not a SUV.  Maybe if some of the people who drive SUVs with only one person in the car (and dont really need a huge vehicle) would downsize, they could save a lot of money at the pump.
Secondly, I am sick of seeing Exxon and oil companies recording record profits, and the Regular Joe has to pay for it.  The economy is already in the crapper, do we have to nickle and dime the working class anymore than we already are?

I live over 30 miles from town and with the price of gas continuing to go up I am becoming a prisioner in my own home.

An afterthought....
I just read someone else's comment about about drivers letting their cars run while on cell phone etc... yes this is a problem.  however, i dont think our demand has increased over 300% from 8 years ago, when gas was around a buck a gallon.  Price is inflated under false pretenses:  there is no shortage of oil.  Just people lining their pockets.

I'm all for supporting local business, but how much did Valero's CEO make a couple of years ago? Almost $96 million? Not only that, but nearly every major petroleum company recorded such high profit margins (I think last year?) that they were brought before a Congressional committee to explain why prices were rising when profit margins were also rising disproportionately. When will the government actually step in to do something that benefits its constituents?

The Arabs are not using their incredible profits to build and industrialize their own countries.  They are not  (for the most part) investing in educating and caring for their citizens.  They do not have countries structured in a way we expect a country to be structured.  That oil happens to be under the "estates" of a few very powerful people who live in a primitive society where the strong man takes everything for himself.  One of the things these strong men want is our wealth and they want it all now.  They are taking our way of life while we split hairs about this and that.  Screw them.  Let's kill them and take their GD oil.

I think these gas price are bulls**t!!  There is no reason to have these prices so high.  If prices are supposed to be sky high, sky high should be $2.00 a gallon not 3 or higher.  I'm through buying all the company's excuses.  All the companys are making record profits so I'm not buying any of the excuses.  Even if their excuses are the truth, I'm still not seeing any action from them to lower the prices.  They're just a bunch of overpaid, greedy bastards!!  I have to cut money out of my fun and and eating out budget.  I drive a Chevy Silverado that averages about 24 mpg's and is V8 powered and I'm not willing to give that up for a 4 cylinder piece of garbage or a hybrid just to save money on gas.  If anybody was offended, sorry, I just don't like little cars.  Either way, we end up paying up so trading in a gas guzzler is just a dumb idea unless your the kind of person that has money to waste.  I don't!  Every dollar I have counts and I shouldn't have to sacrifice driving a vehicle I really like just to save money on gas.  One thing I don't like is Toyota is taking adavantage by selling more cars.  I wasn't happy when Toyota decided to build trucks here and I sure as hell am not happy with them being here now.  General Motors and the other American Automakers are suffering no thanks to these fuel prices and Toyota and I can't stand it anymore.  Either way, I just have to suck it up because I'm not willing to drive a boring fuel efficent car just to save money on gas.  I have no use for a little car.  I have more of a use for a full size truck!  I can use it as an everyday driver and when I need the cargo room, it's always there.  Say what you will but these prices need to fall and I refuse to give up driving my truck.

Tell you what, I'm paying thirty bucks to fill up a little rice rocket these days, and just a few years ago it took half that price.  This is just the start, too - I paid well over five bucks for a pound of ground round today that wouldn't have cost me four three years ago.  Supposedly inflation is around four percent - are you getting a raise that even keeps up with that?  Slowly and surely our spending power is going to erode until we are eating grub worms and lizard tails like they do in India.

I put the blame here on all you clowns that drive around in an SUV.  If you drive an SUV, then YOU are part of the problem.

I have completley chnaged my life. I van pool, I dont go out anywhere, I am very careful on what i spend my money on. Those of you who try to put the blame on dear President Bush for these high gas prices should be shut up and thrown in jail. Our economy isn't what it should be, but that's because of the terrorists out there who are constantly threatening our national security.

I realize everyone's situation/circumstance is different. Here's how my family budget in order to pay gas: we watch the latest movies at friends or family(once a month) and go to the dollar movie (we eat before going to the movies so we dont buy expensive food/drinks), we take sandwiches to work,we eat out only during anniversaries, birthdays, or special occassions, if we eat out, we choose combo plates to share or choose from the dollar menu and drink water, we buy meat at the meat market, we drink kool-aid instead of soda (soda is a luxury), we will run errands only once a week and within the same area, we will take turns watching my 17 month old son to save on day care cost (I work during the day and my husband works at night),we save energy in the home by not using a lot of electricity bill (our bill is less than $100 a month), we put things on layaway instead of paying full price or buy clearance items at TARGET, Wal-mart,BED BATH AND BEYOND, and other stores), we shop at discount stores like Dollar General, Big Lots, and etc. , we will shop in bulk for paper products, meat, and most common household items, and we barter with family and friends.

Debra, how to you save so much to your electricty bill?  Ours is a lot three hundred a month once we start using the a/c.

Here is a thought instead of complaining about the price of gas how about voting for someone who is not a left wing idiot who won't allow the USA to become independant of the Canadians, Mexians and those Arabs. You can complain all you like but when you vote for Hillary or Osama you will get 7.00 gas if one of those morons takes office next year. To all those who blame all of us who still drive our pick-ups and SUVs....get a life!  It's OUR choice.  I have an 08 Ford F-150 and I intend to keep driving it...I bought it cause I wanted it.  That's what makes america great...I have a choice to but a Prius or an F-150.  It's not us who are causing the gas prices to rise.  It's the state of the world, conflicts, OPEC, etc etc that raise the gas prices, not an oil shortage.

Me and my friend carpool to work...I drive 1 week he drives the next...and we carpool in a Dodge Magnum and an F-150.  Works for us!

If Americans would prioritize correctly, they wouldn't have such a time making ends meet.  Wise spending Indeed example...
1. Pay your monthly mortgage or rent; 2. Pay your utilities (includes cable & phone); 3. Pay your Car bill & put aside fuel $$; 4. Pay your Car Insurance; 5. Pay your Credit Card Bills; 6. Buy groceries - bargain buys if you can or are offered by stores (include pet food - most people forget pets); 7. Buy Clothing/shoes/& all items of necessity; 8. Money left over - hold on to it for whatever may come up and to add to your next payday.

Buy the least expensive items at each of the stores you shop.  Stay away from the most expensive clothing/shoes being sold at BIG Named stores...hell you can find the same blouse/shirt, pair pants, socks, shoes, ties at Walmart that these other expensive stores offer.  Example:  Shirt at Dillards/ Macys/Steinmart cost $35 average.  At Walmart or other Retail store it cost $9 to $15...It's the same Brand name.  Same shoes sold for $156 at these Stores can be bought at Walmart/Payless for $12 to $29.
In times like these...Don't go to the movies or rent movies - THESE ARE NOT IMPORTANT IN LIFE TO SURVIVE.  These are luxuries...these don't come first.  SHELTER and FOOD/CLOTHING come FIRST.  Try and practice this method...you will find more $$$ left in your pocket/purse.  Americans prioritize wrong!
 

The rise in gasoline has cause a ripple effect on ALL items sold.  Seen the groceries lately?  Seen the prices of meals at restaurants?  

Three 12-pk of soda for $11.00 is NOT a deal.
2 for $5.00 is not a deal.  (look at other brands of same item are much cheaper cause they don't blind you with the 2 for $5 deal)  Coupons that say save $1.00 on a product as long as you buy 2 or more....HAH!  What a joke!  A lot of people are dumb enough to buy and fall for these gimmicks.  

Coke does NOT need to sell their products that HIGH...they have an extreme volume...20 billion burgers sold daily place do NOT need to sell their burgers for $5.00.   GREED and not the oil prices!!

We can blame Bush, Cheney and the oil companies all day, but who is doing something about it? Unfortunately it is not a US automaker leading the way, its Honda.

Honda is planning to cut them out of the deal.

After the Presidential election dust clouds settle in a year or so, let’s all watch and see if Honda can take on the oil companies and their partners in slowing down alternative fuel vehicle, the US auto makers.

Think about this: Is it dangerous for you to produce and pump your own hydrogen fuel? What if I suggested you could pull your car up to any number of locations, 24 hours a day and with no training or special certification, and no age restrictions pump 25 gallons of a very dangerous flammable liquid into your car any time? You already can. It called gasoline! Do you think we could get that legislation passed if it was not already in practice?

It's not the state of the world, or hurricanes, or Chavez that is causing the incessant rise in oil prices.

It is a SHORTAGE of OIL.  There is not enough to go around anymore, now that India and China have taken up the habit.  High prices are here to stay and if you can save enough by becoming carpooling cowboys (cough) bless your teeny little hearts.  I have heard rumors that if you hold hands you get better gas mileage.

It is smiting we need, and plenty of it.

Smite the Arabs oil extortionists.

Amazing how everything else goes up except your pay check. Nowadays you have to stretch every cent possible, and make extraordinary changes in your personal lives.

Well I remember when i lived in saudi the gas was only 1 ryal per gal  which was equvilant to .26cents U.S. dollars and this was back in 1996.
But now this is just rediculus. What is happening to our society? And why cant we all just get along!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paychecks NEVER get ahead of the Cost of Living.  The minimum wage in this country is a joke.  When Congress says the wage will go be going up...they mean a mere $ .15...what is that?  Congress' joke?  Within the past year, gas has gone up over $1.50, Milk is up to $4 to $5 a gallon, Garbage Bags are at $9.00 to $10.00 for a box of 13 bags, Parking Lot Fees are REALLY outrageous and Congress will on pass a minimum of $ .15 an hour more?  
The Gas Prices ARE the Saudis and Chavez' doings.  The cost of a gallon of gas in Saudi Arabia is around $ 1.12, while in Venezuela it's only $ .12 a gallon.  And America is letting these countries bully us by charging us the HIGHER rates.  When is Congress gonna WAKE UP!!!

I say stop buying from Valero. They are San Antonio based, and i have seen they have some of the higher priced gas in the area. and all they do is post record profits. I comute 40 miles one way to work, drive my little Honda, and carpool with another guy from work. So i don't feel the pinch like a lot of other people do. But i still think it is sick that the US government has allowed this to come to this. The people i really feel for are the OTR truck drivers that are paying 3.99/ gal for the diesel, yes, it is 3.99/ gal at of all places, The Pilot and TA truck stops in New Braunfels.

I got a letter from the IRS in the mail yesterday saying that I qualify for all or part of the $600 economic stimulus rebate. I guess I will use it to fill my truck-once, the way things are going. Unfortunately, not all of us are in a position where we can trade in our larger vehicles for something smaller and more economical so we rob from Peter to pay Paul.

I cant believe in a few days gas is already at 3.19 a gallon. This is ridiculous. I think our cost of living raises should go up then maybe we wouldnt all be venting. There is a lot of bitterness and harsh feeling out there.  I believe the question was ... has the price of Petroleum products affected the way you live/drive.  In my case ... yes ... sort of.  Like some of the others I live over 30 miles from work.  I traded my Ford Explorer for a Dodge Caliber, 22 mpg versus 28 mpg.  and I bought a Motorcycle ... 40 mpg and i ride it 2 - 4 days a week.  But like some of the others, I refuse to give up my '90 Dodge Ramcharger (360 CI, but I did convert it to TB Fuel injection and overdrive transmission and locking torque converter and over sized wheels).

However, I was once as many of you are now, demanding that the government fix it, help every body every time some little thing upset their lives.  FIX IT.  Unfortunately, every time the "Government" "Fixes" it for us ... we give up a little bit more of our freedoms.  Our founding fathers never intended that our "Government" be our Father, Mother, baby sitter, or guardian Angel.  It was intended to take care of the big things that one or two people can't take care of by themselves.  

I won't go into a long rant here and now ... but ... there is a train of thought that we have abrogated our responsibilities as "CITIZENS" to 545 people and allow them to rule over us.  The most outrageous part of that equation is that we elect or appoint them to public office to do our will ... and once they are in office they do as they will instead of as we would will ... and them we re-elect them and send them back to do it all over again.

One or two of the posters before me danced around the answer that I came to a few years ago ... it is all our faults ... we (the silent majority) have let the vocal minorities shove their ideas down our throats for so long that we don't think that we have a choice any longer.

We do have choices ... we can assume our "responsibility" (not privilege) as citizens ... refuse to vote for those who want larger more powerful government ... and send someone to Washington who will do as we want.  Down size government, let the economy float itself, go back to a "real" currency (Gold or Silver or some other marketable commodity) and start taking "Personal Responsibility" for our actions and for the actions of those we elect to govern us.

I live 16 miles from work......I no longer get to go visit my kids, grandkids or friends like I use to, its just not in my budget....gas is too high.....I use to get to go to the movies a couple times a month now I go once every two months.....If I'm lucky I get a raise once a year for 20 to 30 cents an hour....the gas & food wipes me out.. I had alot more money left after bills five years ago..now there is nothing left and I go into my saving every month....this is really sad because I own my house and car. I cann't imagine the people trying to make it with house, car, kids & other bills...I'm late 50's and just cann't kept up.......Something has to give

I feel that we the people should protest on the Gas and maybe stop buying gas for 1 whole day (together as one) and this will put an effect on the Oil and Gas suppliers.  I do not understand why we let the American people put up with this nonsense on gas prices.  $3.50 for gas is half of a persons wage who trys to support his/her family and who wants to work.  We drive people to stay home and they to not have to pay for the high gas prices and asked for help from our goverment.  I DO NOT BLAME THE PEOPLE WHO CHOSES TO STAY HOME.  DO YOU?...........................................

The film begins with a blue-eyed girl coming to live with a clan of "manuk" (that's "mammoth" to you and me) hunters after her tribe is wiped out by what appear to be the bad guys from Conan the Barbarian. Any time gas for my car costs more than my CPS bill, something is wrong.  The increase in gas prices is only for the stockholders.  It is time to limit our trips to the gas pump.  Only put $20 in your gas tank, for SUVs $35.  Cut down on what you pay maybe the price will go down.  Also, boycott the gas station on Saturdays.

Alternative fuels is NOT the answer, Why because for evry tank of alternative fuel a child dies of starvation some where in the world and it may be right here as the value of $ drops and everything goes through the roof. Let them not show up for a week or two all at once all over the country. The rich suffer and so do the poor. everythings sieses. We need to create an oversight group that will watch the lobbiests and not allow them to influence congress and if they do! We fire the congress person for NOT properly giving representation to his region or state. We need to VOTE everyone out of Congress who has been there more then 4 years and NOT allow any former President to use his or her pension for lobbying purposes if it comes to light that they have it is forfitted and NO former President needs secret service protection for life. It has been proven that it is in fact a waste of taxpayer $'s. They have made so much money throughout their presidency and with all they made on book deals that need not be supported by taxpayer money anymore. Let them work for a living and maybe gas prices won't go up so fast!!

When I first bought my truck, before I left the military, I was paying 98 cents per gallon for deisel. 9 years later I'm paying $4.55 per gallon.  I thought getting 20 mpg on the highway with a truck was pretty good. But, when my fuel went from the cheapest to the most expensive...things like family visits have decreased.   I bet this year I won't be able to drive round trip to Penssylvania to visit Mom for around $500.00.  Other things I've done is stopped giving money to political campaigns since the polititians, on both sides, have a big share of the responsibility for this problem.  I'm tired of throwing good money after bad deals.  We only go out to eat once a month now instead of once a week and we have limited our charity giving to just a few organizations.

Valero makes the Gas and they could sell at retail less than the Majors ie Exon, Shell because they are earning more $ per gal. since they make it and retail the product. Exon and others buy the basic gas from Valero at whole sale and then they have to sell it at retail. ie if valero gas is 3.89 and exon is 3.89 valero is making more on the sale becase their spread is much greater. And quality is lacking on the Valero side since they use less additive than the majors. So you dont get what you pay for when you buy Valero. Im not anti-Valero, they just have cheap products and they know it. A friend of mine worked for Valero and he always said they have a license to steal. Also the gas we use is not made from light sweet crude, it made from heavy crude and this type of oil is sold for huge discounts. I would like to follow the crude oil contracts that are sold for record highs and see if they are acutally filled or who loses and how it is all balanced out. Seems that there is nothing fair in the world of business as the common man may think.
