Has Back-To-School Clothing Gone Too Far?

Mini-skirts, tube tops and spaghetti strap shirts are all included in the tax-free weekend.

However, many districts are saying a big fat "NO!" to the revealing clothing.

This mixed message being sent to tweens and teens can be confusing.

The mall says yes, purchase these items and spend less.....but, the hall monitors at school say no, that's inappropriate!

Pop culture and parental consent can clash in the middle of a department store over what to buy for the first day of school.

Our etiquette expert, Diane Gottsman, agrees with school districts and talks about back-to-school clothing etiquette on today's show.

Popular dolls, such as Bratz, encourage the short skirts and heavy makeup.

Do you think it's right? Should children be allowed to be sent to school in appropriate clothes? Has the envelope been pushed too far?

Who cares!  The parents are the authority.  It doesn't matter what the children want.  The parents know what is and isn't appropriate.  Remember your children are a reflection of you!  Dress them well.

There is a lot of types of clothing out there that are not appropriate for some ages, and types of girls/boys.

Also to think about is the matuirity level of these kids, a girl who want to wear a cute tank top (and it covers everything that should not be seen) should not be punished for others mistakes in the way they wear their clothes.
Then again, where do you draw the line? Well I think that should rest in the hands of the parents in most cases the mom's hands. Parents should have the final say in what the kid wears up until the age of 18, or when they move out of the house.

Anyway---don't punish the ones who want to wear a cute tank top, or skirt and DO wear it correctly, watch and monitor the kids that wear low cut, baggy and saggy things.

When young children, especially girls, dress like Bratz, Brittanny, or any one of the popular "role models", and them get sent home from school, or inspire inappropriate conduct by anyone, it is only a reflection of their home environment and the style of parenting they live with. Freedom to choose one's own clothing to wear in public should include good judgement and modesty. Unfortunately, those qualities, especially modesty, seems to have slipped away from the consciousness of our young people.

I think they way children now dress is way inappropriate.  And in my opinion, the parents are to blame for letting them.  Like Shirley said...the parents are the authority not the children.  Yes, they should be brought up to make SOME decisions on their own...but dressing like Brittney Spears, should not be one of them!  Especialy the girls...they need to be taught they can be attractive and beautiful women without the short shorts and min-skirts.  It's sad that their parents do not care any more than that for their children!

It is the parents responsibility, but I've had a problem with that in my familly.  My wife will let my 11yo daughter dress however she wants then when I get home from work I find my daughter wearig these spaghetti string tops that you can see her bra thru the arm pits or short shorts that barely cover her but.  I raise hell, make her change and explain to her why I'm so picky about what she wears, but it still continues, my wife and I just can't agree on this issue.

Who is paying for all of these inappropriate clothes that are sparking arguments between the parents and their kids?  Here's a tip... if you don't want your child wearing it then be there when they are shopping rather than just giving them some cash to go out and make their own purchasing decisions.  It may take a little more effort, but save alot of argument time.
