No Way is this acceptable!!! I am a mother of a 14 yr old, and children are very impressionable, so what they see from others and what they hear from others, they are likely to act on. So, I don't want someone telling these children that an 8 is plus. They will end up starving themselves and end up in the hospital with serious illnesses and possible death. And we all want our children to out live us.

I don't believe that raw numbers like size are that helpful in helping
people get a realistic view of their optimum meight.  A better way is to
get on a scale or maybe get in from of a full length mirror and be realistic.
Remember, fat is the new thin!

The number on the size makes no difference.  A few years ago on either 60 minuts or 20/20, they had a story about clothing sizes.  They had 3 differert women try on clothing.  The items that fit them were all different sizes.  My point is that the sizes are all diferent.  A size 8 item of clothing made by one designer may be a totally different size to another designer. So you can never be sure what a size 8 really is.  My motto, be happy with yourself no matter what size you are.  Life is too short to be worring what other people think about you.  And believe me NO ONE IS PERFECT!!!!!

Also, I definetly agree with the caller too, STOP BUYING THE MAGAZINES PEOPLE!!! Then they will have to focus their articles on more positve and important issues.

I am writing because what  really upset me was not the fact that some idiot at a magazine said that a size 8 was a plus size, but because you all are actually offended by it.  Come on! This is not the only time or the last time that this will happen.  I am only 34 yrs. old and it did not take me a lifetime to figure out that the fashion industry is not out there to make me happy.  Happiness comes from within and it is up to you to figure yourself out.  I exercise and eat healthy and as a mom take on the responsibility of teaching my children about a healthy life.  Yes, they do see movies and look at magazines, but they also now that airbrushing and fake body parts exsist.  Now what I would really like is to see you all discuss about how wonderful we are as women and how comments like this should not get our blood pressure up.  There are far more important things that we should be riled up about.

The fashion industry has definitely gone TOO FAR, in calling any woman who is a size 8 - Plus size.  I am 43 yrs old, 5,7, weigh 128 lbs, and I typically wear a size 8, but both my physicians (a g.p, and ob/gyn) tell me I am UNDER weight, and that I should gain approximately 10 lbs to be 'healthy.'  

I also have a daughter who - before she reached adulthood, felt she was 'too fat', when she read magazines, and I was seriously concerned about her becoming anorexic or bulemic, just to try and 'fit in' to what the fashion 'experts' say is 'right.'

Also, if the fashion industry is now going to consider a size 8, plus size, perhaps all the designers should get together and make it mandatory that their clothing is constructed to meet UNIFORM sizing standards, because although I typically wear a size 8, and am constantly told by friends, coworkers, doctors etc that I am 'skinny', I can sometimes wear a 6, sometimes a 10, sometimes a 5, and sometimes even a 12!!  

The fashion designers should be ashamed of themselves!   They, of all groups, should feel obligated to promote young women to feel comfortable with themselves, as long as they are not overweight and obese.  With as much as they charge for their clothes etc, and the impact they have on our growing girls, they need to take a serious look at what they are telling our future leaders!

I think it is NOT healthy. Before I had kids I was a size 2 or 4. I ate all the time, even keeping up with my brother. I was 28 when I had my daughter. I went from small to what I thought was large, a size 9. After my son, I was determined to loose the weight. However, my body said something different. My kids are 6 and 2 and I am currently a size 7 to 12 depending on style and cut. I am still not liking the way I look. Part of it is two c-sections, not working like I did, and choosing to be a stay at home mom.

Society has put to much pressure on women to look "GOOD". I do not always where make up, and I'm fine with that. You have to accept "you" for who you are with no fancy clothes, make up, or hair a certain way. I am trying to teach my dughter it is not about what is on the outside but, what you hold in your heart. A really good example is Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." Belle falls in love with his kindness not how he looks. If more people look past the shallow exterior and deeper in the interior they might learn something. Untill that happens women and some men will do anything to look the part of the "beauty queen", and our society will still hold looks above heart.

I'm sorry, ladies, but if you wear a size 8, you are really fat. You need to stop stuffing your face full of junk food and join a gym. You might get a man if you're that fat, but you will only have men who are slobs and will get fat like you. Even those guys will be checking out and thinking about better looking women when they are with you.

Oh, PLEASE.  I'm 44 years old; my top is a size 4, but my butt is a size 6 (just a small step under this "plus size).  And I'm 104 lbs on a heavy-lunch day.  I can't even begin to imagine how today's size 8 could be considered "plus size."  It's ludicrious.

Then, on top of the size discrepancies -- WalMart's clothing manufacuturer -- thinks American women have orangutan arms.  Anytime you pick up a long sleeve shirt the arms come half-way down my thighs.  WHAT GIVES WITH THAT????

One thing I've noticed, regarding sizes, comparing men's clothing to womens is that mens is ~measurement~ specific.  Womens is some random, thought-up-by-some "designer", attempt to not offend (I guess).  What woman wants to go in & say "I need a size 40 waist pair of jeans?"

The inhdustry is "RIGHT ON TRACK".  All anyone has to do is walk around a mall or
go to any middle or high school and just take a look at the female population.  It's
disgusting and very unhealthy.  Hopefully this will encourage young women to watch
themselves before it's too late.  When they start shopping with the really "HEAVY DUTY" women they will think twice!!

Don't you understand, Leslie and Shelly, that you are guilty of perpetuating young women's problems with body image?  First you express horror that size 8 is considered large, and then you run a segment on Nicole Richey and moan and groan that she is so thin, she looks so good, why weren't you so slender after giving birth. Think about the contradiction here!  Nicole Richey, first of all, is anorexic. She is unhealthy. No young mother should want to look like her - either before or after pregnancy. But that is exactly the wish you expressed. How does that jive with your earlier anger with the beauty industry for making women feel fat for being a size 8?  Think about it.

In the world of modeling where most are a size negative 4 yes, 8 is a oplus size.  In the real world NO WAY!  People need to wake up and realize how unhealthy those models are!

If size eight is a plus size I most be xxx plus because I am a size 14 and I am 41... I been in the size 4-5-6 up to 7 years, when I got sick and had to be in the hospital. Need I say more! As  a mother of a 18 year old teenager who is a size 8 nearly 6 ft tall and very athletic I am appauld by this. My Daughter plays basket ball for a local school her coach weighted them every first of the week and asked them to loose weight. Some of my daughters Team mate went as far as to buy various diet remedies including my daughter, which I found and a "I SAT WITH HER AND EXPLAIN THAT NO DIET WILL HELP HER IF SHE IS DEAD, FROM BULIMEA AND ANOREXIA." Society thinks that if you are bone thin it is acceptable because HOLLYWOOD AND MODELS ARE.That is not right just look what happened to Karen Carpenter from the Carpenters. " Were is her fame.. she was bone thin  and now she is dead... People need to take care of there self and if someone says your fat or a plus size just smile and say what I TOLD SOME ONE WHEN TOLD I WAS PORKY, EXACT SAYING FROM BOTH HIM AND ME AM I SLEEPING WITH YOU? To those of you who think a size 8 is a "cow"....what miserable, cruel people you must be.  You are the kind of people who screw up the rest of us normal people.  Every person is going to look good at different weight/size due to height, bone structure and muscle mass.  Women are supposed to have some curves.  No, it's not okay to convince the world that being obese is good, or attractive.  But, as long as you are healthy, that's all that should matter.  If you're at a healthy weight for your height, and you exercise, chances are that you're going to look good.  If you're one of those women who think size 8's are large, you're sadly mistaken.  Maybe you should stop and think about the men you seem to get.  Since most women have curves, maybe the men you are with are fantasizing that you are an 11 year old boy, and since you have no curves on your body--it's easy to imagine.  Leave people alone and get a life!!  Seek some professional help if you seem to spend your days picking on people who have done nothing to you!

Look. No one else is to blame if you don't make an effort to take care of your body. It takes discipline. You can't just sit around on your butt all day shoveling ice cream, tortillas, and twinkies down your throat and expect to look anything less than a bloated farm animal.

It's a no-brainer. Everyone here knows how to eat right, and everyone here knows that exercise is a MUST. Otherwise, you're going to wear huge sizes, and your body will be ugly and saggy. There's no excuse for being fat. I don't care how big your bones are. Fat is fat!  Look what happened to Tyra Banks. She's become a massive cow because she no longer takes care of her body!

Once women get to such huge bovine sizes as a 6 or above, the biggest excuse I hear for them not trying to lose the fat is that it takes too much time. What else have you got to do that's more important than taking care of your body? You only get one! Why ugly it all up and look like a big old cow?

Angie, you've posted some very nasty comments here. You must think you're very clever and cute to call anything above size 6 "huge bovine sizes" and "really fat" women wearing those sizes "big old cows." At least fat people can lose weight. Too bad you're ugly on the inside; nothing can help that. I hope "your man" enjoys your attitude when you're old and wrinkly and saggy. Remember, gravity affects thin people too!

I think it's ridiculous to consider a size 8, plus size.  I wear a size 8 and I am not fat or obese.  I exercise and don't eat Twinkies!  But I also don't look anorexic.  I have found that really expensive clothes (from stores like Macy's and Dillard's) run larger than clothes bought at let's say Old Navy.  I would always wear a 6 in the expensive business/office attire and an 8 (sometimes 10) in casual wear.  I think it's the designers warped way to make people feel better about themselves.  Size 8 is AVERAGE!!  Do people forget the model's and pinups from decades ago??  Marilyn Monroe was no size 0!

According to her height, weight, she would wear a size 12 dress today by to the estimations on this page.  I think it also makes some very good points about the fluxuation of sizes by designers over the years.

I'm not trying to be mean, just honest. Terms like "pleasantly plump" and "big-boned" are synonymous with FAT! We can try to deny it all we want, but too many people, including some really sweet people are FAT. It simply means that they don't take care of themselves, and they are not healthy.

Call it what you want, but if you are a size 6 or above, you are FAT. You probably get out of breath too easily and are at risk for a heart attack. Another unpleasantry with being that FAT is that you probably don't smell very good because of the excess perspiration and the accumulation of urine on the cellulite.

Quite eating like pigs and go to the gym. Yes, it's REALLY REALLY REALLY hard, but it's worth it.

Size 8 is a plus size in the FASHION WORLD.  I was watching a reality show where  Kimora Lee Simons told her stylist "i am now a size 4".  She said in the "fashion world size 0 is the new size 2, size 2 is now a 4 and honey forget about size 6"! So yes it is but in real life no! WE DONT LIVE IN THE FASHION WORLD! WE DONT WALK THE RUNWAYS! WE ARE NOT MODELS! Although, I am a size 10 and I do consider it above average.  Times are changing and it seems that all the celebrity magazines and news shows are the main source that tell woman and girls in the world what we should look like.  The media trys to say that Posh Spice is way tooooo thin.  Yet, they say J-Lo,Beyonce, and Catherine Zeta-Jones are "curvy" and we know that when the media says you are curvy they mean you are "big".  It seems you are either too thin or too curvy! What is normal? I say normal is what makes you happy.

I do have a large boned body.  At my lowest weight of 161 (which according to my doctor was a perfect weight for my height and bone structure) - I was comfortable in a 10.  I didn't run out of breath - and I was extremely active.  I have had a hard time with my weight my entire life.  And even when I was considered "fat" - I smelled just fine.  That's just personal hygiene and an entirely different subject.  

And I've seen people who can shovel all that food into their mouth and not exercise and still weigh next to nothing.  It's called METABOLISM.  Some people have a high one and others don't.

It's up to each individual person to take care of their own body yes - but that doesn't give anyone else the right to criticize others!

No one here is perfect - so why should you be allowed to judge someone else?

I wear a size 6 pant.  As noted before, I weigh between 100-105 lbs.  The size difference is due to wider hips from 2 children.

To annoyed, "bigger people might have a medical problem inherited from their families"  It's called the thyroid gland. Overweight women (aka) Cow or Piggy suffer from this. Reseach studies have concluded that overweight Cow or Piggy have this problem because they stuff their mouths all day and force pressure on the thyroid. Studies show when overweight Cow or Piggy eat less, and maintain an exercise plan, can lose weight, studies show.

A size 8 is borderline for plus size,just wish everybody would just tell the truth and live with it,if your a plus woman just be proud of it.

This all reminds me of one woman I know, she is so size obsessed, she can't even admit to the 4 plastic surgery procedures she has had in the past 2 years, she only claims 2! She will DIE of anorexia one day thanks to her obsession...I for one won't feel for her, but I will feel for the people who follow her lead.

I don't buy all the garbage about low metabolism. If you'll get your butt to a gym and hop on a treadmill or an elliptical, your metabolism will increase. If youhave a hard time with it, just do 5 minutes, and before long, you will find that you can increase it. It won't happen quickly, so there's no use fretting that it's going to take a long time. Just do something, and you WILL see improvement. What else have you got to do?

Being fat is also a state of depression that keeps people in a loop of non-motivation. You're simply sluggish and can't get the momentum to do anything about it. When that happens, it's time to lay off all the sweets and starchy foods. They trigger the body to produce insulin, and this drags the body down. You become weak and sluggish, and you just don't care to do anything.

I promise I'm not trying to be hateful to anybody. If you're not 100% satisfied with the way that you look, it's time to do something about it! NOW! Honestly, I believe that every woman can be HOT if she wants to be. She just can't do it by loading her gut with enchiladas and double-meat Whataburgers.

Angie, you're wrong.  A lot of fat people can't help it unless they literally starve themselves on one of the protein diets.  I have a high metabolism and eat twice as much as the average human, and I can't gain weight.  It's a roll of the genetic dice.

Think about it.  Who sets the standard in this country for “sexy”?  The fashion industry.

I've gone from too skinny, to overweight, to average on and on.  I know what it's like to be skinny.  You get to wear lots of fashionable clothe, but the downside is that you almost feel like you have to dress revealingly (if that's a word) in order to look sexy.  Now that I'm not so skinny and more average, I actually feel beautiful just wearing plain stuff without the revealing attire that is in fashion.  I think we all just need to know our own bodies, and if we do think ourselves too fat then loose the weight ... otherwise be happy regardless of what the "fashion experts" (the minority) say .

If you look around San Antonio, a size 20 doesn't seem too awfully big, but it is! Too many of these chicas are just loaded with lard. Yes, we have good food here, but you can't shovel down tacos, enchiladas, and tres leches every meal and expect to fit into decent sized clothes. You should reserve Sears for buying your appliances--not your clothes!

You can sit around and cry all day and call those of us who take care of our bodies skanks and beeattttccchhhhes while you stuff your face full of rocky road and Krispy Kreme, but you're still rotund cows whose lives are unhappy because you can't live like the people on the soap operas you sit around on your butts all day watching because you're too fat to get up out of your chairs without splitting the crotches out of your big ol' granny panties.

I still maintain that anything above a size 6 in this day and age is bovine. If you wear anything that big you should be pulling a wagon or a plow! YOU ARE FAT!

I work with a girl who is about 5'3" and has ballooned out to 110 pounds just recently. She claims it's because of some sort of glandular problem. We make fun of her because we know what the problem is. She's a glutten! The hog sits around and stuffs her face full of junk. No one will dare go around her because we're sure she carries an odor behind her. When you're that fat, you smell. Not only do you perspire a lot, when you're that roly-poly it's hard to reach down to keep yourself clean. Therefore, the smell of stale urine is a given.

Regardless of the situation, if you wear a size 6 you are really hefty and should go on a strict diet, and if you've reached a size 8, you are a big ol' COW. Dresses that enormous should come standard with a bell and a mechanism that beeps when you walk backwards.

Size 8 isn't a plus size...for San Antonio.  What is the average San Antonio size..14...15...21...?

size 8 is not a plus size.  more importantly, sizes 1-4 are not "ideal", they are toddlers ages!  A real woman is not a walking stick but a beautiful creation of GOD.  I wish people would stop forcing women to feel like they have to weigh less than a 100 pounds to be admired by men!

I had a neighbor years ago who used to say the same kind of ugly things you are saying about “fat” people.  The funny thing is, after all her comments, she ended up being about a size 26!

Yes, in todays standards size 8 would be considered a plus size.....I weigh 156 lbs and I went slacks shopping the other day and even the size 8's were too big....what is going on with the clothing industry???  I am the same size I've always been which is a 12/14.....seems the clothes remain the same but the size is smaller.

I am 5 10" and at one time I was a size 7/8 and weigh 135 lbs.  I was starving myself and was not healthy.  How can they say a size 8 is overweight?  

Isn't it funny that a country that has people who feel the government should stay out of the running of our lives,be it health or diet etc, have no problem letting someone they don't even know and has no formal training can tell us we are too  fat and therefore are unacceptable?

I think there are three elements that make up how a woman feels about how she looks.  One is her mate, one is her peers and the other is herself.  My wife knows she looks great because of two things mainly.  She takes care of herself through exercise and eating right and I let her know how good she looks.  She hears it from her peers but that does not have the importance as hearing it from me or knowing that she does her personal best to stay fit.  The numbers game of the modeling world has been out of  the realm reality for a very long time and has really never been a guide for us.  We have each other, a great circle of friends and the knowledge that we take care of ourselves and that we were fearfully and wonderfully made.

my god what has this world come to?  we really should be more concerned with more important stuff like poverty and health care, education and politics.  a couple of people here, not going to say names, have a serious mental problem.  if you think that anything above a size 4 is fat, you need to take a good look at yourself first.  it really depends on a persons height and weight to balance out their body.  what do you weigh angie?  how tall are you?  what about you chicken?  god help you when you get pregnant and have kids!  you cant stay skinny and pregnant without risking serious harm to your baby.  yes, i have kids.  2 of them.  i weigh 160, am 5'5 and im not afraid to say it!  so what?  not only have i been married to a wonderful guy for almost 8 years, i still have hot men flirting with me!  so say whatever you want.  i really don't care.  runway models usually wear sample sizes on the runway, and they usually only go to a size 6.  there are also plus size models.  when we are up at the pearly gates, will it really matter what we weighed or what we looked like?

ok people have any of you actually seen the girl who is allegedly a size 8? Plus sized model, yes, a size 8 no way! Im a size 8 and Im alot smaller than her and shorter. An 8 is not a plus size and she is in no way a size 8 that must have been a typo or maybe she doesnt want people to know her real size. Dont belive everything you read.

I do eat, and I eat plenty. The difference between me and too many women is that I eat right. If more women would check out the produce section sometimes, they would find that there is some really good food there. Not only is it good for you, it's tasty.

I hear women whine all the time that they don't have time to eat right. That's bullcrap! I work and go to school fulltime, and I find time to eat good meals that I fix myself. If you've got time to scarf down a dozen Krispy Kremes and a large pizza, you can find time to make yourself a healthy, good-tasting meal. The Internet is full of good easy recipes and ideas if you're not a great cook.

Another load of garbage I hear from women here is that the fat is a cultural thing. They seem to think that because they are Hispanic, they are supposed to go to Taqueria Jalisco for every meal and eat six of everything on the menu. These are also the same oinkers you see waddling out of China Harbor looking miserable. I am Hispanic and a second-generation Mexican American. That does not prevent me from eating good healthy food.

Hispanic women are the ones who least need to let themselves go and get fat, especially if they're going to be with Latino men. Those guys will be the first to turn to something smaller and prettier once you become a gordita. While you're doing his laundry and cleaning up after him, he's out chasing the cute chicas.

Again, there is no excuse for being a fatty! If you're there, you need to do something about it. It's going to be very hard and it's going to take time. There's not a quick, easy way. You'll just have to stop being a wussy and be strong and do it.

I'm 5'4", and right after my divorce I weighed 117 lbs.  Now, according to Angie I was a fat cow; but I was too thin and I looked very unhealthy.  When my children see pictures of me back then, they tell me how bad I looked.  My collarbones stuck out, my hipbones stuck out, and I had no breasts!

So Angie - you should just keep your mouth shut because you are an idiot and don't have a clue!

As far as the fashion designers are concerned - as was commented on a few posts above - most of the fashion designers are gay men.  Of course they want models who are stick thin; with no hips or breasts - because they want them to look like young men!!!!!

They need to start taxing people for being overweight.  These fat people
drive around in their cars causing major stress on the roads of this city which is why we have all the potholes.  Also, when I go to the HEB I have to walk twice the distance just to shop because I'm having to go all the way around these folks just to get my shopping done.  They block up the isles so HEB widens them which just makes and people get fatter.  It's like they want to take up all available space.  Then if that's not enough, some of them get on the cell phone and then they're totally out of control and even more dangerous.  It's like a horror movie sort of like The Blob.

I agree with David W. These fat people block up all the aisles at HEB and they just stand there and grunt and smell bad. If its not bad enough a lot of them ride on those scooters because they are too lazy to walk. These same people will run over you trying to get into a parking place right up front because they are too lazy to walk. Most even have handicapped stickers but their handicap is that they are just fat and lazy.

To: David and Ricky, y'all are mean people. You don't understand my overweight problem and of others. I have a Gland problem that makes my eat uncontrollably. I need my dozen Donuts in the morning, I can't help it, ok? For brunch I'll have a snack of 1/2lb of bacon and 1/2 dozen eggs, scrambled. I have a light lunch that consist of a whole roasted chicken with delicious garlic mashed potatos. Mid-afternoon snack is double meat with cheese from Whataburger, no fries. Dinner is usually a rack of ribs, Beef brisket and several sausage links, with sides. After watching t.v., I'll snack on a bag of potato chips with dip. My midnight snack is a box of cereal.

You see guys, this is not normal, if I could eat half of what I eat, I could lose a lot of weight., it's not my fault. This disease needs a cure. We need medical research and funding.

First off - Fat people driving don't causing potholes you idiot!  

Second off - if you're healthy it shouldn't bother you to walk extra distances shopping.  Or are you one of those people driving around the parking lot for 30 minutes to get a "close" parking space?

Third off - People on the phone in general are idiots - skinny or fat.

And last to Ricky - like Reality Check and elise03 stated earlier - smelling bad is not a symptom of being fat.  That's just bad hygiene!

I tape the Living Show everyday, and I watched the show about the US Magazine commenting on size 8.  I am a size 8 and have always been proud of it, I always thought that was a nice size to be.  What will the fashion industry come up with next.

I will tell them that those models they use are way to thin, and I think that most women would like to have more curve to them.  Look how beautiful the women were back in the day, and most of them had curves, and looked Great!

I'm still proud to be size 8, about 10 years ago I had lost some weight, this put me in a size 6.  Then I was told I looked like I had a eating disorder.  I feel if you live a healthy lifestyle, eat right, move around, and are happy in the inside that is what counts.

To SA Mom: Some people do need scooters because they are old or handicapped. Thats ok. Most people you see on those things do not need them. They are just fat and too lazy to walk to the cookie aisle. I see real handicapped people and elderly people having to park far away from the store because the fattys take up all the handicapped parking. Around SA there is a racket going for those blue handicapped tags. If you know the right people or can pay a few extra bucks, you can get one and not be handicapped. Many fat people get their doctors to say they are handicapped when they are not.

Most bad smells do come from poor hygiene but most of these really fat people do hav bad hygiene because as Angie said they can't reach all the way back there to clean themselves.  Many times if they are too fat and lazy to walk to the cookie aisle in the grocery store, they are too lazy to clean their houses or their selves. I agree that some skinny people stink too.

To Ricky - I do agree that many times you see people who are taking advantage using both the scooters and the handicap parking spaces when they are really just lazy, but you also need to consider that sometimes what you perceive as someone abusing or using the system is a person with a problem that you cannot see.  My mother has a friend who looks perfectly healthy on the outside, but who in actuality has had three heart surgeries due to defective valves, and who cannot walk far because of that. Although she is neither overweight nor old, because she doesn't "look" sick, she could very easily be seen as one of those people who are abusing the system.

I think that the long and the short of it is that we all need to be more tolerant and not be so quick to generalize and categorize. I've seen a lot of the "all fat people" comments in here and it is just as true for overweight people as it is for Hispanics or blacks or Caucasians.  Not everyone is good or bad - not all overweight people have poor hygiene, not all Hispanics are lazy or belong to gangs, not all Caucasians are prejudiced...the list could go on and on.

ok thin and pretty is ok - thin and ugly is not- now if you think you are pretty and then you have a britney problem- I love a thick girl that when me and that size 8 or 9 or even larger are having sex my hips bounce off her butt when we are in the doggiestyle position. if I had a thin girl in that position my hips would hurt from the butt bones. so if you ask me if a thin girl is good yeah it is butt I prefer large women

I don't think some people here should get bent out shape because of this topic.  If someone don't like themselves on how they look, then do something about it, but if you are fine or comfortable, then by all means stay how you are.  So to some 8 is just a number.

Like others mentioned, it is true that height and bone structure plays a role on ones physic.  That is why we do not look the same.

One thing I always say is, "Excersice to live longer and life won't be to short."  And if one excercises for the right reasons, to be healthy and not trying to impress or compite,  you will get more benefits out of it.  Some of those benefits will be looking and feeling good, if you have kids, see them grow up and show them an example to them.  "Where there is a will there is a way."

Leslie and Shelly, let me say that you both have a terriffic figures.

Being at a healthy weight (as defined by physicians -- not Hollyood!) matters much more than clothing size. Having recently lost 50+ pounds, I'm just now getting to my physician-approved healthy weight range. At 5'4" and 142 pounds, I wear a size 4 or 6. Size 8 is officially too big for me in virtually every label at every price point. In fact, I just brought some lovely size 8 clothing to Goodwill this morning! When I wore size 8, I probably weighed between 150 and 160 which, I think we can all agree, is definitely "overweight". So for me, size 8 IS fat.

While I'm totally psyched to be wearing size 4 and 6, I'm still looking at losing another 12-15 pounds. At my current weight, I look and feel much better than when I was pushing 200 pounds, but I'm certainly not emaciated, skeletal, or a "walking stick figure" either, nor will I be when I reach my goal of 125 - 130.

I think we're mixing up the issues here, ladies. The issue with being "fat" isn't about appearance, it's about health and being overweight is unhealthy. It's pretty simple. I get so tired of hearing overweight woman say that being "thin" is not realistic. That's huge lie and we need to stop believing it. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight IS absolutely realistic and I am living proof. I spent YEARS telling myself that I wasn't fat since I wore size 12. HELLO? I weighed nearly 200 pounds. I WAS fat! I thought I ate well and that I was destined to remain as I was for life but that wasn't true either. The fact is that weight loss is about calories in and calories out. Eat fewer calories than your body burns and you lose weight. I used to HATE it when people said that but it's absolutely true. I thought I was eating healthfully, but I wasn't. Do you know that a typical salad at a restaurant like Chilli's has more than 1200 calories or a bran muffin at Dunkin Donuts has more than 400? We don't need nearly the amount of food that is served to us. Now I eat between 800 and 1200 calories per day, I exercise and I consistenly lose weight. It IS possible if you do the work.

Let's stop kidding ourselves and take responsibility for our bodies and our health. Get to the gym. Stop eating crap. Get off the fast food, the sugar, the white flour, soda, and processed foods that dominate the American diet. You already know how that junk tastes and what it does to you and I'm here to tell you it's NOT worth it! For the moms who are worried about their daughters being obsessed with being thin, why not encourage them to be "obsessed" with good health - lots of fresh foods and plenty of activity too? While I agree that being obsessed with thinness can be bad for girls, trust me when I tell you it's not easy being a fat girl.  I'm not sure that the "scars" I have from the words of cruel people will ever completely go away no matter what size I wear.

So, is size 8 fat? For me, the answer is YES because when I wear it, I am beyond my healthy weight range. For some of you, it may not be fat at all. Vanity sizing and the addition to lycra in so much of our clothing makes sizes so skewed. Focus on achieving a healthy weight and your dress size will take care of itself.
