I called it the Coaches Under Fire Bowl tonight, the game between embattled A&M coach Dennis Franchione and embattled Nebraska coach Bill Callahan. If that's true, Callahan better watch his back, because I'm not sure how the new Athletic Director, Nebraska's all-time winningest football coach, Tom Osborne, will take to seeing Big Red go down big to other Big 12 competition.
More importantly around here, though, is this question. What can Dennis Franchione do to keep his job? Right now, his Aggies are 3-1, and tied with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State for first in the Big 12 South. And they have complete control of their destiny after beating Oklahoma State and with Oklahoma coming in 2 weeks.
What if Fran runs the table, and makes it to San Antonio for the Big 12 Title game? Is that enough to save his job?
I'm not even sure that a trip to the Alamodome would satisfy Aggie fans who are tired of meangingless 8 win seasons. As I've heard from all the Aggies around the station, they're tired of not being able to win the big one (ie Miami earlier this year). And it seems evident that Franchione opened up a huge can of worms with his ridiculous "secret" newsletter.
So it'll be interesting to see what happens to both Callahan and Franchione for the rest of the season. I don't see Callahan returning to the land of Corn after this season at all (and that's probably a good thing, I mean, who wants to live in Nebraska?).
And I'm not sure what the future holds for Dennis Franchione. But what I do know is that a google search of the phrase fire Franchione returned 76,700 hits. Talk about a coach under fire.
