Worth Keeping Around?

Worth Keeping Around?

When the Spurs sent out their invitations to training camp, everyone knew the deal. As coach Gregg Popovich said, "We've got 15 guys under contract and everyone here can count from one to fifteen". Truth is, there simply is not room on the roster for a young free agent. The Spurs brought back 12 players from last years team, signed Ime Udoka in the off-season and added Ian Mahinmi from France. That is 14 guaranteed contracts plus Arizona rookie Marcus Williams. On an NBA roster you are only 12 players are allowed to suit up. Most think that Mahinmi and Williams will both end up in Austin playing for the D-league Toros.
Then there is the problem of Darius Washington. The kid from Memphis is downright tough. He had 18 points, 8 assists and 9 rebounds recently against Baron Davis and the Golden State Warriors. So the question. Is he worth signing and keeping around? Maybe not. I don't pretend to know what the Spurs honestly think of the kid, but I do know this. Beno seems to have a very limited future in San Antonio. He has been demoted countless times and is injured again. Over the years the Spurs have cut the likes of Raja Bell and Howard Eisley only to see them start in other places later on. Is the Washington kid one of those type of prospects who will be playing somewhere in the NBA soon? If so, do you consider cutting Udrih loose even it means eating his salary? It just seems that the future is bright for Mahinmi, Williams and yes even Washington, yet Beno's best days may be behind him. That's my point, let's year yours.

Yes!!!  Please cut Beno!  Sure he can stroke it and is a creative passer, but you can only do that stuff when you're healthy and he can't seem to stay that way.  I still remember from last training camp when Pop said that Beno was the 5th best PG on the roster putting Barry and Manu ahead of him.  I think he's a good player but I've always been skeptic when it came to his ability to stay with people.  He's not that quick of a player and guys like Kirk Hinrich of the Bulls and Luke Ridnour of the Supersonics continuously went by him.  Where as Darius Washington held his own against Baron Davis, and even got recognition from the All-Star after the game.  So I am all for cutting Udrih for Washington, completely.

Now that's my point after I read yours Don.

Beno Udrih has the talent but he lacks the motivation and health to contribute every game, especially in back to back games.  Trading him for possibly a second round pick and keeping Darius Washington is the best option for the Spurs.  He has an upside that includes talent, youth and toughness.   Together with Ian Mahinmi and Marcus Williams they could be the foundation for the future of the Spurs.

Sure Washington has potential, but does anyone think the Spurs will eat a contract just to open up a slot for him.  I know it's not Steve Francis type money, but it's the Spurs we're talking about.

You assert that each of the afore mentioned individuals can count from one to fifteen.  I accuse you of being overly optimistic.

Yes we afore mentioned individuals can count from one to fifteen.  That is why we are saying to either cut Udrih or trade him for a pick.  Because that way the roster goes from fifteen to fourteen and makes room for someone like Darius Washington.

There are many teams in search of PG.  Trade Beno for a future pick, Cleveland and Portland have ties SA and might be willing to give up a pick for him.  Boston???In the grand scheme of things the Spurs have invested five years and traded away Barbosa rights among others because they thought he would turn the corner.  Well that corner never came, this preseason was his time to prove to Pop and R.C. he was due a new contract and be part of the future.  Again, another let down.  He’s very inconsistent on the court, the talent is their, but mentally he’s to up and down and that translates to his poor play.  He lacks mental toughness and has been injury prone.  Not his fault just the facts.

I don’t see SA trading him until February and being packaged with the likes of Barry’s expiring contract if they both start the season slow.  Vaughn being injured doesn’t help with depth, so unless Manu starts the season at back-up PG you would have Washington backing up Tony to start the first few games.  The upside Washington could be that diamond in the rough, although is prone to turning the ball over in college he has the hunger to make things happen.  Beno has had many opportunities over the years and the Spurs might not be ready loose an investment that has proved to be a loss.  Big decision!

After trading Scola for nothing but cap space who knows what they’ll do.  They are on the phone right now testing his value, difficult to get much with out playing in the preseason.  Teams wont be willing to help SA out.

I hate to be the one to say it.  But I told you so.  Spurs kept Darius Washington and traded Beno Udrih for a second round pick.  Gotta love it!
