Is it lame that Oregon fans ran on to the field after their team, which was the favorite and higher-ranked team, beat USC? A little.
But is it even lamer that Kentucky was fined $500,000 because their fans rushed the field after the big upset win over LSU? Absolutely.
But trust me when I tell you this, there's no feeling for a fan like rushing the field.
God didn't give us all the skills to be athletes. That's why there's people like Tim Duncan, and there's people like me who cover Tim Duncan. I understand this. But, when you rush the field, you honestly feel like a part of the team, and that's something that can't be matched.
I'm not kidding you when I say one of the top 5 days of my life was the day when Colorado beat #1 Nebraska 62-36. The student section rushed the field, no one got hurt, and there was just something mystical about wandering on the field I had seen from the stands and on TV so many times.
Here are the reasons anti-field-rushers give for their stance.
- Safety-With team officials taking down the goalposts, there's not much safety concern. Though, I would advise those who don't want to rush the field to seek higher seats before that clock hits triple 0's.
- It's become cliche- It doesn't matter if you sitting from home think it's cliche. For those kids in Oregon or wherever, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you'll always remember.
If there are others, I will refute those too. I really think that as long as no one's getting hurt, this is a tradition that needs to stay in college football. So let's not rush to judgement, and let's let the fans have their moment of glory.
