Most Hated Rival for Spurs

We're just hours from the first Spurs-Suns game of the 2007-08 season, and I'm hoping its the first of many, that include a tense playoff series.  As a San Antonio, I love my Spurs and it's fun watching them knock off the Suns in the playoffs.  But as an "unbiased" media geek, the storylines are endless.

1.  D'Antoni is a good guy, and so is Nash.  If you didn't have a horse in the race, they'd be a good pick because they truly are engaging personalities.

2.  Horry a villian?  Never here in S.A. but definately in the desert, and I actually think it's a role he embraces.

3.  Nash vs Parker:  A 2-time MVP against the 2007 Finals MVP.  Enjoy it as long as it's around.

4.  Amare Stoudemire is a freak of nature (and that's a compliment).  The things he is able to do on the court, for his size are amazing.

5.  Tim Duncan:  See reason 4 and remember, Duncan destroys the Suns in ways that will NEVER show up on SportsCenter.

6.  3 out of 5:  The Spurs have beaten the Suns in 3 playoff series the last 5 seasons.  By the way, every time led to a Spurs championship.

Here's my question.  Is it "the" rivalry for San Antonio?  Or does Dallas still dominate the trash talk?

Who's your favorite Spurs opponent to hate?  And enjoy tonight's game.

As much as I dislike the Suns I do not hate them. I do however HATE the Mavs and pretty much everthing about their orgnaization from Cuban to the fans and yes including Avery. I am not happy that we are retiring his number.........:(

The Mavs are definately the opponent to HATE.  They are arrogant and they talk trash but have nothing to show for it.  As for the Suns, I like them a lot because they are a great team and they are fun to watch.  I also believe both the Spurs and the Suns have mutual respect for each other.

The spurs will be dominated this year. Duncan is getting old and his ankles are showing it. The MAVS will be victorious this year. And all the obnoxious Spurs fans will have nothing more to cheer for because San Antonio doesn't have any other sports!!

Yeah the Mavs will win just like they did in 2005 and in 2006.  Oops.  How do you spell choke M-A-V-E-R-I-C-K-S.  Now back to the question that was asked.  I would say that the Mavs are still the rival.  Since they have recently won multiple games against the Spurs including the last playoff series.

Mavs fan confused... said:

Ok Spurs fans....With Dallas being my home town, I had NEVER heard any negative words  in my entire life about the San Antonio Spurs, not on the news or from Mavs fans.  Dallas couldn't care less about the Spurs.  I really don't know what sparked this so called hatred towards the Mavs.  Can someone please tell me when this all started?  With me not being from here originally (and there being no mention of hatred towards the Spurs on the Dallas end) and for only living here for close to 3 years, I have not figured out what the heck happened between the two teams.  When my family moved here, we thought we could root for the Spurs and the Mavs, but after seeing and hearing the rude attitudes of the Spurs fans towards the Mavericks, we sadly lost respect for the Spurs team and for some of the fans (make note, not all of you are like Blondie, Emma and John Thomas).  We had never seen so much hatred, trash talk and arrogance.  Hate is such a strong word and I think, over used.  Seems to me (an "outsider") that the Spurs fans are fair weather fans.  For instance, a Spurs fan aquaintance said they didn't expect the Spurs to win when Duncan was out (and not the first time I have heard it)...what is up with that?  You should always expect your team to win, but know it is possible they may not.  Wonder what it would be like here if the Spurs hadn't won Championships.  Seems as though you all act as though a team is NOTHING with out Championships, which isn't the case.  That is just some of the point of view from a San Antonio "new comer".  Regardless of where I am from, I have friends who live here from all over the country and they all seem to have similar outlooks.  Anyway, just wondering what caused all this hooplah.  Please enlighten if possible.  Thanks!

To the confused Mavs fan:
The media has helped to create this so-called rivalry especially after the 2005 playoff series between the two teams.  I don't think that this series between the teams is anywhere close to being a true heated rivalry like the old Lakers-Celtics, Pistons-Celtics, Pistons-Bulls, or Knicks-Heat rivalries of the past.  I think the real rivalry is between some of the fans. As far as your other comments I believe you are dead wrong.  Spurs fans are not arrogant and rude (if you want rude fans go to Philadelphia) but we are very proud of the success of the team.  San Antonio has some of the nicest and supportive fans of any professional team in any sport and we are far from fair weather fans(although I am a real cowboys fan I would have to say that some cowboys fans are true fair weather fans).  No matter what the outcome of this season I expect to see the Mavs and Spurs in the playoffs in May/June.

Thank you John Thomas for clarifying a bit.  The media here is a little over the top in comparison to Dallas media.  I still don't understand why everyone hates the Mavs, but to each his own I guess.  In response to your "Spurs fans are not arrogant and rude" comment, I am sure that is true for most...as it is for most Mavs fans.  But, there are always going to be the few that make the other fans look bad, like the one's who give me, and my other transplant friends from Dallas, dirty looks when we wear our Mavs shirts, etc.  I have other stories, but will spare you the details.  I guess what I meant was, that in my (and my friends) experience and from my point of view, rude is a word that crosses my mind (and my friends minds), when it comes to actions of SOME Spurs fans.  Sorry if it offends you, or anyone else, that is just the descriptive word I used.  I do have many many Spurs fan friends, and we co-exist happily.  :)
