    Remember when?

  • As SNL’s the Church Lady would say, “How convenient?”

The WigI’m sure you’ve all read or heard by now that Britney Spears has been admitted to UCLA hospital under a 3-day psychiatric hold. If you haven’t heard here’s a recap from TMZ.com:

“Last night, Britney's new psychiatrist went to her home and felt she was a danger to herself and others -- partly because of her reckless driving and partly because of her "downhill behavior." As a result, the shrink launched a plan (days in the making) to have Britney committed to UCLA Medical Center by calling the cops.

Sources tell us the cops knew it was coming. In fact, the plan was for cops and paramedics to take Britney away the night before, but it was scrubbed. Last night, it all went down according to plan. Cops even used code to minimize craziness in transporting Britney to the hospital. Over the police radio, she was referred to as "The Package."

But here is where my conspiracy theorist side kicks in. It has been widely reported that Britney's mother, father and brother have been "working closely with the LAPD for weeks" to get her back in for psychiatric care. And as referenced in the TMZ article the plans were to take her in the night before but that didn’t happen. Why? In my cynical opinion….it’s all a sweeps ploy. Today is the first day of February sweeps. Everyone tries their best to get the best scoop or the most scandalous story and of late Britney Drama = Ratings. Entertainment shows everywhere are making an offering to the ratings gods for their “golden” fresh material. They could have taken her in any time but they didn’t. All I can say is “How Convenient”

What do you think? Have I just had one too many cups of coffee and lost all reason or is it possible that this is a ratings ploy?

  • American Idol or American Ringer?

American IdolAmerican Idol ratings are vanishing. It has been widely reported that this was the first season ever that they did not have higher ratings than in the season before. Maybe it was because they were noticeably nicer. Last year producers were criticized for being mean to the contestants during the early audition rounds.  Or maybe America is over American Idol. Ruben Studdard, Katherine Mc Phee and Taylor Hicks all got dropped from their record labels.  Last years winner, Jordin Sparks, who’s song Tatoo is all over the airwaves released an album a few weeks ago that debuted at #10.  That’s the worst debut of an American Idol winner EVER.

I was listening to a local radio show this morning and heard that somebody leaked all the finalists’ names for this year. Many of them had something in common: they have had recording contracts in the past; some of them even had multimillion dollar contracts with big labels like Arista records. And just when you were beginning to think that the judging process was unfair listen to this: one of them was even nominated for a Grammy Award.

That got me to thinking: thousands of people turned out for the American Idol auditions in San Antonio and were turned away because they weren’t “talented” enough but is it a fair competition if people off the streets with no experience are competing against people with record contracts and Grammy nominations? (I would never challenge an Olympic swimmer to a race.)

Does this change the way you think about Idol? Will you be less likely to watch knowing that it’s no longer about a young person from a small town making their dream of becoming a star come true? I was never a big fan of the show but it seems to take the fun out of it when you realize that you aren’t cheering for the underdog; you are hoping the person with the smallest (past) record contract wins.

  • Come on people its 2008...Has Imus taught you nothing?

Anchor Kelly Tilghman, a former golf professional joked in a Golf Channel telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship with her co-anchor Nick Faldo that since Tiger Woods was so hard to beat his challengers might have to “lynch him in the back alley” to defeat him.

The Golf Channel issued a statement saying that they regretted Ms. Tilghman’s remarks, and they have decided to suspend her for two weeks saying, “While we believe that Kelly’s choice of words were inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate.”

Ms. Tilghman claims that, “I have known Tiger Woods for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments.

Tiger Woods has said via his agent that he did not take offence to the remarks. So since he doesn’t mind should we?

Do you think that a two week suspension is punishment enough or should more action be taken against her for her remarks? Tell us what you think.

  • How many bowl games can one person possibly watch?

Bowl GameIt's the new year and with that comes the time honored tradition of the college bowl game. Now I don't pretend to be a sports expert or even a sports fan but this weekend while hanging out at my dads house we were looking for the score of a particular bowl game on ESPN which turned out to be quite a task. We watched as the ticker scrolled through what seemed like hundreds of scores when it occurred to me...have there always been this many bowl games?

In actuality, I found out that there are 33 college bowl games from the ones we have all heard of such as the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl to some that I felt were a little more obscure such as the Insight Bowl, the papajohns.com Bowl and my personal favorite the Humanitarian Bowl  sponsored by Roady's Truck Stops. I realize that being invited to many of these bowl games is a huge honor and with it comes a huge payout for the participating teams ($17 for the Orange Bowl), but what is the point of having so many bowl games? Doesn't the lack of exclusivity take away from the prestige of playing in a bowl game? It seems to me that having so many bowl games is a lot like a kids birthday party where everyone is given a prize for playing so no one feels left out.

Tell us what you think? Are there too many bowl games, or is this just the useless ranting of one non-sports fan?

FYI: I found the Humanitarian Bowl logo by googling "crapiest bowl game." Don't beleive me? Try it.

  • 2007 The Year of TV Scandal and Celebrity Mishaps-Part Two

I admit that I am addicted to TMZ and other celebrity gossip sites. As I catch up on my daily fix, it makes me wonder if celebrities were always this messed up or if technology has made their mistakes more public. Anyone with a cell phone can be a paparazzi and celebs are having their dirty laundry aired out not just by strangers but by "friends" and relatives. I know there is an insane amount of money involved with being a star but at what price? Do you think that some celebrities do what they do just for the attention or do you think that they are just normal people gone mad because of the constant cameras in their faces? In 2008 we should all count ourselves lucky for being who we are rather than wishing for fame and fortune just look what being famous got these celebrities who could not keep their emotions in check:

    April

Who's the "Thoughtless Little Pig?" The TV scandal and mishaps continued in April with 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin's horrific message to his 11 year old daughter Ireland. In case you missed it here is a small excerpt of his bad judgment and parenting skills: After Ireland failed to answer her father's scheduled phone call from New York on April 11, Alec went berserk on her voice mail, saying "Once again, I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone," adding, "you have insulted me for the last time."

Switching his train of thought, Baldwin then took a shot at his ex-wife, declaring, "I don't give a damn that you're 12-years-old or 11-years-old, or a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care about what you do." The irate Baldwin went on to say, "You've made me feel like s**t" and threatened to "straighten your ass out."

"This crap you pull on me with this goddamn phone situation that you would never dream of doing to your mother," screamed Baldwin, "and you do it to me constantly over and over again." he also went on to call her a "thoughtless little pig". I don't know about you but I can never watch 30 Rock again without thinking about what a loser he is. Someone please direct him to parenting class.

GereWho knew kissing was a crime? At an AIDS awareness rally in India, Richard Gere decides he's going to plant a big wet kiss on the cheek of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. She did not see it coming and looked horrified as the media snapped shots of her in a compromising position. Apparently Mr. Gere did not read up on the Indian culture before he arrived because public displays of affection are a huge no-no. So much so that a judge issued an arrest warrant for Gere for public obscenity charges punishable by up to three months in prison. Something tells me Gere will not be vacationing in India any time soon.

You want fries with that? I could not watch this video when I saw it on TV and still have to look away but former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff was filmed as his drinking problem spiraled out of control.  Poor David was just trying to enjoy a juicy burger while lying shirtless on the floor of his Las Vegas home when the alcohol got in the way. I'm eating my lunch right now so I will not comment further on this but having your daughter film you while you drink, and puke, and eat, and puke again is just wrong. He may give Alec Baldwin a run for father of the year.

Stay tuned to the TV Talk blog for the rest of the years drama. There is way too much juice to include. Until then...let us know what you think about these events. Do you think that anyone was unfairly judged? Was there a particular event that kept you glued to the TV screen to see what happened next?  Is there something in the Hollywood water making celebs go crazy or do you think our culture's obsession with celebs every move is pushing them over the edge? • Who's the daddy: The Jamie Lynn Spears father search continues

Pregnant SpearsI know we received a lot of comments about Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy and whether or not her show Zoey 101 should be canceled. Well there has been an update that I thought TV Talk readers would love to know about. Apparently there is some scandal circulating on the net that states that Casey Aldridge is not the father of Jamie Lynn's baby, an adult co-star on Zoey 101 is and Casey is being paid off by the family to keep the real baby daddy out of the big house. I have honestly never sat through an entire episode so I am not sure what adult co-stars she may have, so I researched the bios of the Zoey 101 cast members on the net and everyone appears to be underage if their real ages are the ones listed on the website.

Click here to read the complete story...

I also saw a clip on TMZ that said that Casey and Jamie Lynn lived together with Mama Spears for a few months. I'm not up for a mom of the year award but what did she think was going to happen (if this story is true)? Do you think this is just another tabloid story fabricated to sell magazines or do you think that Casey is taking the fall for the real dad? It seems like a lot of trouble to go through if it's not your baby. What do you think?

  • 2007 The Year of TV Scandal and Celebrity Mishaps-Part One

2007 was a celebrity gossip columnists dream. From Britney Spears meltdown to Isaiah Washington’s foot-in-mouth disease, there was no shortage of scandal or bad judgment unfolding on the TV screen. Here is a look back at the events of January-March '07 keeping PR teams busy.

    January

Should have done a background check-Oprah Winfrey opens the $40 million Leadership Academy for Girls with all of her celebrity friends in attendance. Unfortunately, nine months later the school became the center of a controversy when several girls accused a dorm matron of sexual abuse.

Aqua Teen Hunger ForceIt seemed like a good idea at the time-Cartoon Network’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force caused chaos when the signs hung on bridge overpasses near transit stations caused bomb scares. Turner Broadcasting agreed to pay $2 million for causing the scare and the head of the network resigned.

My mother always said, “If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all”- Isaiah Washington responds to a question at the Golden Globes about a dispute with a cast mate by saying “No I did not call T.R. a faggot.” He was fired from the show in June and in my opinion rightfully so.

    February

You are just trying to get yourself fined by the TV powers that be- Prince performs at the Super Bowl halftime show. Let’s just say he ended the show in a naughty silhouette that the FCC did not like very much.

Someone should have told her she had a cone shaped head before she did this- Britney shaves her head after a stylist refuses to do it for her. It’s only the beginning of her confusing antics.

    March

I'm not a medical examiner but something's not right- Anna Nicole Smith died of an "accidental" overdose of prescription drugs and was not laid to rest for nearly a month because there was a dispute over who would get her body and custody of her baby. How could anyone who really cared about her let it go on for so long?

  • Jamie Lynn Spears is 16 and PREGNANT what is Nickelodeon to do?

    Jamie Lynn Spears

If you haven't already heard the shocking news Jamie Lynn Spears, sister to popwreck Britney Spears is 16 and pregnant.  Apparently the star of Nickelodeon's Zoey 101 is more than 4 months pregnant and due in early spring. Jamie Lynn and her 18 year old boyfriend, Casey Aldridge whom she met at church are soon to be parents and both families are very excited about the news. After recovering from the initial shock of this story I started to wonder...

    1) Isn't it illegal for a 16 year old and an 18 year old to be "together"?

    2) Who did Lynn Spears think she was kidding when she wrote the parenting book "Pop Culture Mom" which chronicles her life as a mom and talks about how to raise high profile celebrity children? The way Britney turned out may have been a fluke but now that I've heard the news of little Jamie Lynn, I don't think that even if the book does eventually get released that people are going to buy it. I could be wrong, but she's the last person I'd be looking to for parenting advice.

    3) Is Lynn Spears responsible for what's happened to her children? Where was she when one of her children was having a meltdown and the other was hooking up with older boys? I have two children of my own so I realize that she can't control everything they do, but she was certainly first in line to negotiate her cut of the cash for the rights to their scandalous stories. In fact, she helped Jamie Lynn negotiate a $1 million deal with OK! magazine which includes the exclusive rights to the pictures of Jamie and Casey's baby. It seems wrong to me that her mother would want this to get out on the cover of a magazine; the publicity can not be good for the Spears clan and it should have been discussed within the family before the story was released. (The only reason I can think of to sell this story to the press is to take some of the spotlight off of Britney who is clearly spiraling out of control.) Britney was not even told about her sisters pregnancy, she found out from a media outlet.

    4) What is Nickelodeon going to do about Zoey 101? The season three finale of the top-rated show is scheduled to air on January 4  with a cliffhanger:  Will  Zoey remain at her California boarding school, Pacific Coast Academy, or move to London with her parents? If she remains on the show how will they hide her pregnancy and more importantly should they? If they chose to continue to air the show will we let our kids watch? A lot of young girls (right or wrong) idolize her shouldn't they take a stronger moral stance? Are they glorifying teen pregnancy or just doing their jobs? This is not the first child star to get into adult trouble, Disney Channel overlooked the fact that underage Vanessa Hudgens had her nude pictures on the internet so I guess it can be done but are we sending the wrong message? Will our little girls think it's cool to be 16 and pregnant? I can hear it now,"Jamie Lynn (Zoey) has a baby I wish I had one"

Nickelodeon released a statement saying "We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being."

I hope that means they will no longer carry the show, but maybe as a mom I'm being a little too critical.

  • Knight Rider Fans It's Your Lucky Day!

Knight Rider fans it's your lucky day! According to Variety Magazine if resurrecting the Bionic Woman wasn't enough NBC is bringing back Michael Knight and his crime fighting car. Yes K.I.T.T fans, a "Transformers" inspired reworking of the hit 80's series is set to air this fall on NBC. If the miniseries is successful it may turn into a primetime show.

Knight Rider aired from 1982-1986 so I don't remember a lot about it but I do remember that my male relatives were enthralled by the series and its "state of the art special effects". Everyone I knew had a mirrored poster or a K.I.T.T-like model car. If you get a chance to catch an episode on TV Land take a close look at how far special effects have come. It's almost funny when you watch it now, a lot of the things the car could do like talk to you are becoming common place today. Now if I could just get my car to pick up my laundry.

Trivia Time: Which actor portrayed the main character, Michael Knight in Knight Rider and what other NBC shows has he appeared in recently?
